Maryland Debt Collector Ordered to Dismiss More than 3,000 Cases

By Howard Silver on October 17, 2012

Debt buying company Worldwide Asset Purchasing was recently ordered by Chief Judge Ben C. Clyburn of the District Court of Maryland to dismiss with prejudice 3,168 Maryland debt collection cases. As reported by ABC News, the order is the result of a federal class action lawsuit against the company that accused them of misstating debt amounts owed and other forms of unfair debt collection.

Worldwide Asset Purchasing was accused of improperly listing Social Security numbers in court filings, misstating amounts owed, and filing lawsuits to collect debts after expiration of related statutes of limitations. In addition, it was alleged that the company and its affiliates were not registered or licensed properly.

Debt buying companies operate by buying debts that were abandoned by the original credit companies for a small amount of what is owed so that they can pursue the obligation on their own. Often, these debts are passed around multiple times between agencies.
